Background
Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting small ruminants and causing major socio-economic losses, particularly among pastoralists and small-scale livestock producers. The continued presence of PPR in the Middle East highlights the need for sustained surveillance, vaccination, and coordinated regional action to advance towards global eradication.
Within the Global PPR Eradication Programme (GEP), significant efforts have been invested to review progress and refine priorities. The PPR Middle East Roadmap Meeting, held in April 2025 in Riyadh, evaluated the regional situation, identified key gaps, and emphasised the importance of harmonising national policies with regional and global strategies.
One of the major recommendations was to strengthen Public–Private Partnerships (PPPs) as an essential mechanism to support vaccination delivery, logistics, surveillance, veterinary outreach, and stakeholder engagement. PPPs are a recognised component of the WOAH PVS Pathway, contributing to stronger Veterinary Services and better disease control outcomes.
This regional workshop aims to enhance the capacity of Middle Eastern countries to design, implement, and evaluate PPPs that support PPR control and eradication, in line with the priorities identified in the regional roadmap.
