On 27 November 2022, the Regional Meeting on Aquaculture in the Middle East will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. At the meeting, the Aquaculture Middle East Network “AQMENET” will be launched, consisting of countries from the Red Sea and Gulf.
The participants of the AQMENET Meeting will discuss how to improve and develop scientific and technological capacities in the field of epidemiology and diagnostics in the aquaculture sector with consideration to:
- The multifunctional importance of aquaculture and the peculiarities of aquaculture in the Middle East region.
- Increasing demand for aquatic animals and their products.
- higher risks of spreading diseases with increasing international trade in aquatic animals and products.
- Aquatic animal diseases require more knowledge, diagnostic capabilities, and the development of vaccines to prevent better, investigate, and control.
- The WOAH Aquatic Animals Commission has identified the need to set up a network of laboratories for aquatic animal diseases and confirmed by the WOAH Biological Standards Commission.
- The importance of production practices, production systems, and trade as potential risk factors for the occurrence, spread, and transmission of diseases.
