In alignment with WOAH’s commitment to providing technical support and expertise to members to improve their national veterinary legislation, SRRAG hosted a webinar on veterinary legislation in February 2025. Dr. Rahul Srivastava from WOAH Capacity-Building Department, the invited speaker, delivered a couple of presentations covering the aspect of the role of WOAH standards and VLSP. According to chapter 3.4 of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code of WOAH, legislation plays a vital role in enabling the veterinary profession to achieve its mandate effectively and to establish strong governance throughout the entire veterinary domain.
He also highlighted the uniqueness of VLSP as a pioneering program that was developed to assist members in conducting systematic reviews and assessments of their veterinary legislation. A key component of the PVS Pathway is targeted support that provides WOAH members with a practical tool for identifying regulatory gaps, eliminating weaknesses, and ensuring smooth implementation and enforcement.
Following the presentation, the audience from member countries engaged in very productive discussion and interaction, focusing on the importance of developing drafting capacities & competencies, as well as methodologies for reviewing, improving, and updating national veterinary legislation.
