The World Organisation for Animal Health Sub-Regional Representation for Arabian Gulf (SRRAG) organised the webinar “camel trypanosomiasis” on the 3rd of July 2024.
Camel Trypanosomiasis, also known as Surra, caused by Trypanosoma Evansi, is a serious pathogenic protozoan transmitted mechanically and non-cyclically by hematophagous biting proliferative flies. This ailment has a wide distribution throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world and continues to pose major health problems in many camel-raising countries. The scarce availability of essential and reliable data on the prevalence has impeded appropriate schemes for prevention, control, and eventual eradication in many countries.
The webinar was delivered by Dr. Bernard Faye, a member of the CAMENET technical committee member and one of the prominent camel scientists. He discussed the disease’s epidemiology in the Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula, focusing on improved management and control practices.
The objectives of these awareness lectures on important camel diseases are to enhance scientific knowledge and expertise as well as promote the development of the camel sector in the entire region.
