World AMR Awareness Week 2024

Header

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a pressing global health and socioeconomic crisis. It has significant impacts on human and animal health, food production and the environment. Drug-resistant-pathogens pose a threat to everyone, everywhere. Yet, much more can be done to raise public and stakeholder awareness.

Educate. Advocate. Act now.

The theme for the World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) 2024 is, “Educate. Advocate. Act now.

This theme was chosen based on feedback from an online survey among stakeholders from the human, animal, plant, and environmental health sectors, which collected nearly 200 responses globally.

This year’s theme calls on the global community to educate stakeholders on AMR, advocate for bold commitments and take concrete actions in response to AMR. The 2024 UNGA High-level Meeting on AMR and the fourth Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on AMR, for instance, provide a critical window of opportunity for political and financial commitments as well as increased accountability in response to AMR. Stronger political leadership, advocacy and accountability are needed at all levels and the time to act is now.

WAAW is celebrated from 18 to 24 November every year.

A campaign guide for World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW), a global initiative held annually from November 18th to 24th. WAAW aims to raise awareness about the critical issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which refers to the ability of microorganisms to resist the effects of antimicrobials, such as antibiotics. The guide emphasizes the global threat posed by AMR, which can affect humans, animals, and the environment, hindering the treatment of infections and potentially leading to devastating consequences. The document stresses the need for a “One Health” approach to tackling AMR, recognizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. With the theme “Educate. Advocate. Act Now,” WAAW 2024 encourages global participation in educating stakeholders, advocating for bold commitments, and taking concrete action to prevent and address AMR. The guide provides a range of calls to action specifically tailored for policymakers, young people, media, schools, NGOs, resource partners, and the private sector. The document includes actionable steps individuals and organizations can take to raise awareness, promote responsible antimicrobial use, and support research and policy initiatives. Overall, the guide serves as a comprehensive resource for individuals and organizations looking to participate in WAAW and contribute to the global effort against AMR.
