A New Regional Representative for the Middle East, Professor Ahmad Al Majali is appointed on the 1st of August 2024.

 

It was announced on the 1st of August 2024 that a new WOAH Regional Representative for the Middle East, Professor Ahmad Al Majali, has been appointed.

The appointment process involved a competitive selection among experts and valuable veterinarians. Professor Al-Majali brings a wealth of expertise to this role, with over two decades of experience in academic research and international collaboration.

His exceptional educational qualifications, including a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Jordan University of Science and Technology and a PhD in Comparative Pathobiology and Clinical Sciences from Purdue University, USA, make him uniquely positioned to lead in the field of veterinary epidemiology and infectious diseases in the Middle East.

Dr Al-Majali brings extensive experience in supporting animal health. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Jordan University of Science and Technology (FVM-JUST) from 2009 to 2013. He has worked with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in the Middle East and Africa in a number of technical capacities since September 2013 to July 2014. Professor Al-Majali has conducted several studies on the effects of transboundary animal diseases on trade and the impact of climate change on livestock in the Near East and North Africa region. He authored or co-authored more than 70 papers in refereed journals and a book on transboundary infectious diseases.

The veterinary community in the region looks forward to Professor Al-Majali’s leadership in this new capacity, anticipating that his expertise and vision will significantly contribute to addressing the complex challenges of animal health and welfare in the Middle East.
